ON THE ALERT

ON THE ALERT

INTRODUCTION:
In today's fast-paced and chaotic world, maintaining spiritual alertness and readiness is crucial. Being spiritually alert and ready enables us to discern right from wrong and stay grounded in our faith. Key Aspects include Discernment, Resilience and Purpose.
Being ready is not a destination, but a journey. It requires ongoing effort, reflection, and growth. We can live a more intentional, purposeful, and fulfilling life, equipped to face each day and ready for future events.

1. What was commendable about the attitude of both the wise and foolish virgins?

LESSON INSPIRATIONS
Readiness is more than excitement –
Anticipation without preparation is dangerous –
 True preparation is ongoing –
The Bridegroom’s coming is sure –
The cost of unpreparedness is eternal –
The Church must awaken from complacency –

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail. Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. Preparedness, when properly pursued, is a way of life, not a sudden, spectacular program. Preparedness is the calm before, during and after the storm. Every person who prepares is one less person who panics in a crisis. Preparedness is the ultimate confidence builder. Success is where preparation and opportunity meet. Expectation favors the prepared mind. The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today.”

KEY POINTS:
Knowledge - what you do depends on what you know
Faith - able to see beyond the now and take action
Rapid response - willingly and joyfully
Interest - Love driven
Availability - ready to go
Commitment - walk the talk
Preparations - Personal and Spritual
Good begining - right decision, people and place

Preparedness for Spiritual Opportunities: The wise virgins were prepared for the arrival of the bridegroom by bringing extra oil for their lamps. This teaches us the importance of being spiritually ready at all times.
Matthew 25:4  "But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps."
The Consequences of Negligence: The foolish virgins did not prepare adequately and were ultimately left out when the bridegroom arrived. This highlights the consequences of neglecting our spiritual responsibilities.
Matthew 25:10  "And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut."
The Importance of Personal Responsibility: Each virgin was responsible for their own lamp and oil. This illustrates that we are individually responsible for our relationship with God and cannot rely on others' faith.
Philippians 2:12  "Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling."
The Urgency of Being Watchful: The delay of the bridegroom emphasizes the need to remain vigilant and watchful. We should always be ready for the return of Christ, as we do not know the day or hour.
Matthew 25:13  "Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh."
The Reality of Finality: Once the door was shut, the foolish virgins were unable to enter. This serves as a reminder that there will be a finality to our spiritual journey—Christ will return, and it will be too late to make spiritual preparations at that moment.
Luke 13:25  "When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are."

2. In what ways, then, did the foolish virgins fail?

LESSON INSPIRATIONS
Knowledge without action is foolishness –
Spiritual light must be maintained –
The timing of Christ’s return is unknown –
Initial neglect leads to final regret –
Wisdom is proved by preparation –
The oil represents personal responsibility –

“A little neglect may breed great mischief. Negligence is the rust of the soul that corrodes through all her best resolves. Neglect starts out as an infection then becomes a disease.”

KEY POINTS:
Personal agenda/Interest - destroys corporate goals
"It doesn't matter" - It will matter and makes the difference
Indifference - drifting away, disunity

Negligence - Subtle but destructive
Just enough is never enough
Extra miler - beyond expectations

Failure to Prepare: The foolish virgins did not bring extra oil for their lamps, demonstrating a lack of preparation for the anticipated arrival of the bridegroom. This illustrates the necessity of being ready and prepared for spiritual opportunities.
Matthew 25:34  "They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps."
Neglecting Personal Responsibility: The foolish virgins relied on others instead of taking personal responsibility for their spiritual readiness. This teaches us that we cannot depend on others’ faith or preparations to sustain our own relationship with God.
Galatians 6:5  "For every man shall bear his own burden."
Underestimating the Importance of Timing: By failing to anticipate the bridegroom's delay, the foolish virgins showed a lack of understanding of the importance of timing in spiritual matters. They did not recognize that being ready means always being alert and waiting expectantly.
Matthew 25:5  "While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept."
Lack of Perseverance: When the delay became long, the foolish virgins succumbed to sleep rather than remaining vigilant. This serves as a reminder that we must persevere in our faith, even when waiting periods feel extended or our resolve weakens.
Luke 21:36  "Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man."
Opportunity for Fellowship: The foolish virgins were ultimately shut out from the wedding feast. This reflects the importance of being engaged in our spiritual community and maintaining our fellowship with Christ; neglect can lead to missing out on eternal rewards and relationships.
Matthew 25:10  "And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut."

3. What admonition was given to the foolish virgins? How did they react to this advice?

LESSON INSPIRATIONS
The Holy Spirit is nontransferable –
It is not selfish to guard your spiritual preparation –
There is no substitute for personal relationship with God –
The urgency of readiness cannot be overstated –
God gives the Spirit for living, not for storing –
Delay can close the door forever –

"I try to do the right thing at the right time. They may be just little things, but usually they make the difference between winning and losing. Success is simple. Do what's right, the right way, at the right time. To do the right thing at the right season is a great art. The power of one man or one woman doing the right thing for the right reason, and at the right time, is the greatest influence in our society."

Proverbs 28:13  "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy."
Heeding Warnings Before It's Too Late:  The wise virgins advised the foolish ones to go buy oil, but this did not rectify their lack of preparedness. This teaches us the importance of heeding wise counsel and warnings before it is too late to act.
Hebrews 3:15  "While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation."
The Importance of Personal Action: The admonition to go and buy oil required the foolish virgins to take personal action. This underscores that we must not only listen to advice but also be willing to act on it in our spiritual lives.
James 1:22  "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves."
The Consequence of Inaction: The foolish virgins delayed addressing their lack of oil, which ultimately led to them being locked out of the wedding feast. This serves as a warning about the consequences of inaction and procrastination in spiritual matters.
Proverbs 6:1011  "Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man."
Final Opportunity for Entrance: The foolish virgins found themselves shut out after the door was closed. Their reaction—realizing they were too late—teaches us the sobering truth that there may be a final opportunity for entering into God's kingdom; we must be diligent and prepared.
Matthew 25:1112  "Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not."

4. What lessons are given to us in the conduct and attitude of the wise virgins?

They make the design. Success in any endeavor requires singleminded attention to detail and total concentration.

This points to the reality that there are final opportunities in life, and once they are past, we may no longer have access to what we desire, particularly in relation to salvation and fellowship with God.
Luke 13:25  "When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are."

For the midnight cry.

2. The trumpet sounds, the thunders roll;
The heavens passing as a scroll;
The earth will burn with fire. [Refrain]

3. Poor sinners then on earth will cry,
While lightnings flash from out the sky,
O mountains, on us fall! [Refrain]

To warn poor sinners, and to cry,
Behold, the Bridegroom comes! [Refrain]
