VIRTUE

VIRTUE
INTRODUCTION:
Virtue includes moral excellence and spiritual fortitude. Acquiring and sustaining spiritual virtue, however, goes much more than moral principles alone. Spiritual drives and sustains the physical. Good morals without spiritual foundation will fail. In order words, spiritual virtues are imparted through salvation and total transformation.
It is important to defend the imparted virtues, and it takes courage to be able to stand for the things which we know are right. Christian virtue is the shining evidence of faith expressed in action—truthfulness, purity, humility, courage, patience, and love lived out consistently. Virtue is not just moral excellence by human effort, but the reflection of Christ’s character flowing from within a believer. It sets the standard in a world of compromise and draws others to the light of the gospel. To walk in virtue is to show that grace is not only received but also revealed, proving that the Christian life is both holy and powerful. How is your virtue?

TEXT: Daniel 6:1-28
KEY VERSE: “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 15:58)

QUESTIONS:

1. Explain what is meant by the portion of today’s text about Daniel which states that “an excellent spirit was in him."

RELATED SCRIPTURES:
Proverbs 22:1 — “A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.”
Philippians 4:8 “…whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any excellence, think about these things.”

LESSON INSPIRATIONS:
Daniel 1:8 8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

Power of determination and purpose
Faith is organic and impactful – making possible what is not naturally possible
Living testimony – best outreach – practical Christianity
The standard – Godliness - raise up the standard (but it must be acquired)
Consistency makes the difference – in season and out of season
Godliness will distinguish you – Excellent Spirit
The Source – God, through salvation – other Christian experiences

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. A great soul will be strong to live, as well as to think. Talent is a gift, but character is a choice. The first and greatest victory is to conquer yourself. A good character, when established, is not easily overthrown. Virtue is excellence practiced until it becomes second nature. An excellent spirit is wealth that cannot be stolen. The fragrance of virtue is stronger than the power of position. Excellence in spirit shines brightest in hidden places. Character is the crown no one can take away. A good spirit lifts others without lifting itself above them. Virtues are not ornaments—they are foundations. Possessing an excellent spirit means being the same in secret as in public.”

“Cultivating virtues like wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice leads to resilience, meaning, and flourishing. Leaders with consistent virtues (integrity, fairness, humility) inspire greater trust and loyalty among teams.”

KEY POINTS:
Imparted excellent spirit
It is not in man
Uncommon virtue
Acquisition through salvation
Maintenance through study...
Application of the truths/knowledge - Doer
Evidence - Distinguished from others/norm

What is meant by “an excellent spirit was in him”
It describes Daniel’s exceptional character: integrity, wisdom, humility, courage under pressure, and a cooperative attitude toward authority and leadership.
It signals inner disposition rather than mere outward success: a steadfast faithfulness to God that manifests in decisions and conduct.
It explains Daniel’s outstanding performance: he handled complex tasks with discernment, consistency, and mercy, earning trust and favor.
It points to a life governed by principled character: honesty, prudence, self-control, and a servanthood mindset.
It highlights supernatural or divine endowment evident in practical living: God’s backing showing up in daily choices and leadership.

Integrity under pressure
  - When faced with tough choices, let truthfulness and uprightness guide you, even if it costs you personally.
Practical takeaway: develop consistency in small things (habits of honesty, punctuality, steadfast ethics) so you’re trusted when bigger tests come.

Cultivate wisdom that serves others:
An “excellent spirit” blends knowledge with discernment to benefit the whole organization or community, not just yourself.
Practical takeaway: seek wise counsel, analyze consequences, and aim for solutions that uplift peers and leaders.

Demonstrate respectful leadership and humility:
Daniel’s excellence earned him favor because he combined competence with a respectful attitude toward authorities.
Practical takeaway: serve as a bridge-builder—offer competent input respectfully, and seek the good of the group over personal gain.

Maintain consistent godly character in adversity:
Daniel’s excellence shone even in environments hostile to his faith; his character remained steady.
Practical takeaway: build spiritual disciplines (prayer, reflection, accountability) that anchor your decisions when challenges escalate.

Convert influence into positive impact:
Favor and recognition become platforms to influence for the common good, ethical standards, and mercy.
Practical takeaway: use opportunities to model integrity, mentor others, and advocate for fairness, justice, and compassion.

Practical takeaways for daily life
Start with self-improvement: strengthen your character foundations before you need them.
Practice discernment: differentiate right from convenient, then act on the right even if unpopular.
Build trust step by step: reliability earns credibility that opens doors for responsible influence.
Lead by example: show excellence in routine tasks; leadership often follows from consistent performance.
Align goals with larger good: let your work reflect service to others, not just personal advancement.

2. Show evidence of how Daniel’s life exemplified virtue.

RELATED SCRIPTURES:
Matthew 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
James 1:22  But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”

LESSON INSPIRATIONS:
People are watching – The devil is watching – what will they find?
Accuser of brethren – The devil/ungodly – Godliness will keep you
Be deliberate – every word, action and reaction counts – Watch
Living it, is a stamp of spiritual integrity – Greater impact
We have a testimony to keep and defend – Preserve it

“An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching.”

“Do all the good you can, by all the means you can… in all the ways you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.”
“The superior man is modest in his speech, but exceeds in his actions.”
“Example is not the main thing in influencing others; it is the only thing.”
“Virtue spoken inspires; virtue lived transforms.”

“Virtue without action is like a seed that never breaks ground.”
“The fruit of virtue is only seen when planted in deeds.”

“People trust and follow leaders who live out their stated values, not just talk about them. Moral hypocrisy (professing values without living them) leads to social rejection and reputational loss. Knowing the good is insufficient—habits of action form true virtue. People internalize virtues more from lived examples than from verbal instruction”

KEY POINTS:
Incontrovertible - based on expectation
Evidence to establish requirements
Fruits or characteristics of the subject

Application: Establish core convictions early and stick to them even when it costs you socially, materially, or politically.

Persistent spiritual discipline enables courage in crisis:
Evidence: Daniel’s regular prayer life and faithfulness in solitude enabled decisive action when danger loomed (e.g., the lions’ den).

Application: Let reliability, honesty, and steadfastness in small matters precede big opportunities; credibility opens doors for positive influence.

Humble acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty in success:
Evidence: Daniel consistently directed glory to God when revealing divine truths to kings, showing humility and dependence on God rather than on his own power.
Daniel 2:27-28 — “Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot be revealed to the king; ... but there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days...”
Application: Acknowledge God’s source of wisdom and outcomes; use positions of influence to point others to God’s sovereignty and mercy.

3. Explain how the word faithful in verse 4 of the text relates to virtue.

4 Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.

RELATED SCRIPTURES:

4. Daniel maintained his spiritual fortitude even when doing so meant possible death. Does God expect Christians today to go to such extremes? Explain. See Revelation 2:10.

RELATED SCRIPTURES:
Joshua 1:9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
2 Timothy 1:7 7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

“Courage/fortitude as a “cardinal virtue” — necessary for practicing all others, because without it, fear and pressure undermine integrity

KEY POINTS:
Established standard and good conduct
Adherence to standard
Christian conduct put to test daily
Passing the test - evidence of identity
Attempt to find fault - non found
Christian identity makes good citizens
Faithful unto God first - Vertical
Horizontal faithfulness next -interpersonal

SEARCH:
1) Daily spiritual discipline builds courage to stand when life is at stake:
Application: Establish regular disciplines (prayer, Scripture, accountability) so you can act rightly under pressure rather than reacting in panic.

2) Honest, uncompromising obedience may provoke opposition:
Application: Stay committed to God’s standards even when it costs you reputation, status, or security; trust that God can turn opposition toward a redemptive outcome.

3) Integrity should govern both private habits and public actions
Application: Let integrity permeate all areas of life—work, leadership, and relationships—so actions match professed faith, enabling trust and influence.

4) God-centered perspective sustains courage in danger, not merely human prudence:
Application: Search out history of God’s deliverance and faithfulness; let that perspective steady you when outcomes seem risky or uncertain.

5) Endurance unto death is not the default expectation for all Christians, but faithfulness unto death is honored by God:
Application: Be spiritually prepared to endure hardship for Christ if needed, while prudently seeking to live in ways that protect life and love your neighbors. Trust God for the outcome and the reward.

5. Entrapment was used against Daniel. How might this device be used by the devil against a Christian today?

1 Peter 5:8-9 “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.”
James 4:7 “Submit yourselves therefore to God. resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

LESSON INSPIRATIONS:
It begins with you – your mind – Mind your mind
Victory or failure start from emotional level – Mind processing

“Consistent moral choices strengthen “moral muscle,” making it easier to resist temptations over time. Avoiding high-risk or questionable situations is more effective than relying on willpower alone”

Character is shaped by repeated choices; inconsistency erodes virtue, while steady practice makes it second nature. Once individuals allow small compromises, larger moral failures follow more easily.
