DISCOVERY: The Prophetic Consolation
Isaiah 40:1 through 48:22
KEY VERSE: “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be
not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee;
yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” (Isaiah 41:10)
1. What is your concept of God as you take
into consideration Isaiah 40:12, 15, and 22?
Isaiah 40:12, 15, and 22 12 Who hath
measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the
span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the
mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?
15
Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small
dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing.
22
It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof
are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and
spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:
LESSON
INSPIRATION:
God
is almighty and all-powerful
Even
so, He cares enough in details and personally
God
gives power - People are looking around for power
He
increased power to the feable
Natural
strength and power may fail - Natural course and circumstances
For
those who wait on the Lord - Best decision ever
Blessings:
Renewed strength, mounting capacity, energy to run, no wear and tear effects,
keep walking without burn out
God
is big - Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent
Yet,
considerate and loving enough for our small hearts
Human
perspective description of God is limited
Don't
limit God - Sometimes we do with our limited perspectives
God
cares - In great and inconsequential details
IT HAS BEEN SAID:
“The true concept of God begins when man
realizes how infinitely small he is before Him.”
“All the nations combined are but a drop
compared to the ocean of God’s sovereignty.”
“He that sitteth upon the circle of the earth
sees all things, rules all creatures, and sustains all life by His word.”
KEY POINTS:
Our concept of God determines our perspectives
We have right perspectives via divine
knowledge and inspirations
God is without measure, limits, beginning or
ending
APPLICATIONS:
Cultivate humility and awe before God’s
greatness:
-
Start a daily gratitude/reflection journal focusing on at least one thing about
God’s majesty you noticed that day (creation, providence, or Scripture).
-
Pause before making a major decision to acknowledge God’s sovereignty, asking
Him to guide your steps
Trust God’s sovereignty over people, nations,
and circumstances:
- When
anxious about anything, reframe the moment with a brief, prayerful reminder of
God’s sovereignty and care for you.
-
Choose one ongoing situation to hand over to God this week—write a short prayer
or a one-sentence declaration of trust for that issue each morning.
2. Judah was facing the threat of
destruction by Assyria, which was one of many reasons to fear. What was one
reason not to be afraid? (Isaiah 41:10-14) How does this promise apply to us?
Isaiah 41:10-14 10 Fear thou
not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen
thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my
righteousness.
11 Behold, all they that were incensed against
thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that
strive with thee shall perish.
12 Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find
them, even them that contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be
as nothing, and as a thing of nought.
13 For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right
hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.
14 Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of
Israel; I will help thee, saith the LORD, and thy redeemer, the Holy One of
Israel.
LESSON
INSPIRATION:
When
God speaks - What is God saying about it? - Stand on the promises of God
Before
the circumstances come, God already took care of it
All
inclusive covenant provisions - All means ALL
We
have God’s assurance - God is working for us
Example:
"Working for money" or "Money working for you"
God
is a promise Keeper
Represent
God - He handles your concerns - Spiritual relationship
First
victory - Victory over sin and the devil
IT HAS BEEN SAID:
“The antidote to fear is the assurance of
God’s presence.”
“God’s presence transforms fear into faith and
weakness into strength.”
“To fear when God is with us is to forget who
He is and who we are in Him.”
“Fear not—for divine help is not a future
promise but a present reality.”
“When God holds our right hand, it means He
not only leads us but also enables us.”
“The believer’s confidence is not in
self-sufficiency but in divine companionship.”
“Even when we feel as insignificant as a worm,
God addresses us with compassion and power: ‘I will help thee.’”
“God’s promises move us from fear to
fellowship—from trembling before danger to triumph through divine help.”
KEY POINTS:
Fearful situations - Circumstances of life -
We do face them
Reasons to fear - Considering facts, figures,
precedence
There is always one reason not to be afraid -
The WHY
God's covenant promise - Fear thou not - The
battle is against God
Don't value your worth with the physical - You
are much more
APPLICATIONS:
God’s presence with you is the antidote to
fear:
-
Practice the presence of God in daily moments: pause, breathe, remind yourself,
“God is with me right now.”
- When
fear resurfaces, quote or meditate on Isaiah 41:10, turning fear into petition
and trust.
God promises personal care and deliverance for
His people:
- When
you feel small or overwhelmed, remind yourself that God will help you; your
worth to Him isn’t measured by your strength but by His promise to help.
Identify a current challenge (work, family,
health…) and write a short prayer or declaration for each day this week: “God,
You promised to hold my hand; guide me, help me, and deliver me in this
situation.”
Journal one moment each day when you notice
God’s care: a provision, a breakthrough, a word of encouragement, an answered
prayer. Note how that shapes your fear into trust.
3. Isaiah 42:1-4 makes reference to Christ,
and is quoted and confirmed in Matthew 12:18-21. Part of Christ’s mission on
earth was to demonstrate God’s righteousness and to be a Light to all nations
(Isaiah 42:6). What is righteousness, and who is supposed to be righteous?
Isaiah 42:1-4 1 Behold my servant, whom I
uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him:
he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his
voice to be heard in the street.
3 A bruised reed shall he not break, and the
smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.
4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till
he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.
Matthew
12:18-21 18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in
whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew
judgment to the Gentiles.
19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall
any man hear his voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and
smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.
21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.
Isaiah
42:6 6 I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will
hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the
people, for a light of the Gentiles;
LESSON
INSPIRATION:
Righteousness:
Right actions, motive, attitudes and conversations
Salvation
transforms - Worldliness to Godliness - Covenant restoration
We
are then empowered with God’s righteousness for a purpose
Purpose
of Imparted righteousness - Demonstrate righteousness
Specific
ways: Our body, priorities, values, goals, actions, reactions, relationships,
service, obedience, dependence on God...
RELATED SCRIPTURES:
IT HAS BEEN SAID:
“Christ came not only to save sinners but to
reveal the moral glory and righteousness of God.”
“In Christ’s life and death, God’s
righteousness ceased to be an abstract ideal and became a living reality.”
“Through Christ, the light of God’s
righteousness broke through the darkness of human sin.”
“Christ was the living portrait of divine
righteousness, painting before all eyes what God is and what man ought to be.”
“Christ’s light does not merely expose
darkness; it transforms it.”
“Jesus is not a light among many; He is the
Light by which every nation sees the path to God.”
“Those who are born of the Righteous One must
bear the marks of righteousness.”
“God’s children are called to display His
righteousness as light-bearers in a dark world.”
“Righteousness in the believer is not
self-earned virtue but Christ living through us.”
“The church is the continuation of Christ’s
light — called to manifest God’s righteousness in word and deed.”
“We are to be living proofs that the
righteousness revealed in Christ has power to transform human life.”
KEY POINTS:
Jesus Christ is on a mission - Declare God's
righteousness
Righteousness is possible in a corrupt and
sinful world
Jesus is the Light of the World - Divine Light
in a dark world
Righteousness? Godliness
We need God’s righteousness in order to have a
relationship with God
APPLICATIONS:
Do one act of integrity each day this week:
Share a short testimony of how Jesus’
righteousness has changed a recent choice or attitude with a friend or family
member.
Live as a light to all:
- Be a
consistent beacon of hope: practice generosity, truth-telling, and
reconciliation even when it’s difficult.
4. In spite of Israel’s deliberate sin
against God and their rejection of Him as their rightful King, what did He say
He was to them? (Isaiah 43:3, 14) What did Israel fail to do? Isaiah 43:22
Isaiah 43:3, 14 3 For I am the
LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom,
Ethiopia and Seba for thee.
Isaiah
43:22 22 But thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob; but thou hast
been weary of me, O Israel.
LESSON
INSPIRATION:
Our
Saviour - saving us from the curse of sin
Our
Redeemer - Paid the full price for our redemption - Buy back
God
will not force Himself on us - We have to reach out to Him
Ignoring
God is ignoring our blessings and victories
RELATED SCRIPTURES:
IT HAS BEEN SAID:
“God remains the Holy One of Israel even when
His people are unholy.”
“The constancy of God’s love stands in
contrast to the inconsistency of human faithfulness.”
“Even when God’s people were faithless, He
remained their Redeemer, acting on their behalf for His name’s sake.”
“God’s holiness is not the enemy of His
compassion; it is the very reason He redeems.”
KEY POINTS:
Sin is not the problem - Jesus paid it all -
It is finished
God loves sinners but hates their sins (wrong
choices and decisions)
Sin prevents God from taking authority over
our lives - We loose
God is calling and waiting for restoration -
Reminding us of our identity
APPLICATIONS:
God remains your Savior and Redeemer:
- Let
God’s saving faithfulness shape your response to temptation: run to Him, not
from Him, when you trespass.
- Live
in gratitude by prioritizing trust in God’s grace in your decisions,
relationships, and priorities.
Seek God and call on Him, rather than
weariness and neglect:
-
Establish a daily practice of calling on God through prayer, Scripture, and
reverent reflection, especially in seasons of weariness.
-
Prioritize spiritual disciplines that brings closeness with God
- Seek
renewal by reorienting your heart toward God, and accepting His invitation to
draw near.
5. The people of Israel were witnesses to
the fact that there was no God beside the God of Heaven (Isaiah 44:6). How did
the prophet reveal the utter foolishness of pagan idolatry, of which Israel was
a part? Isaiah 44:9-20
Isaiah 44:6 6 Thus saith the LORD the King of
Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last;
and beside me there is no God.
Isaiah
44:9-20 9 They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; and
their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses;
they see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.
10 Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven
image that is profitable for nothing?
11 Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed:
and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them
stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be ashamed together.
12 The smith with the tongs both worketh in
the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of
his arms: yea, he is hungry, and his strength faileth: he drinketh no water,
and is faint.
13 The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he
marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out
with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the
beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.
14 He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the
cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the
forest: he planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it.
15 Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he
will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread;
yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and
falleth down thereto.
16 He burneth part thereof in the fire; with
part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied: yea, he
warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:
17 And the residue thereof he maketh a god,
even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth
unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.
18 They have not known nor understood: for he
hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot
understand.
19 And none considereth in his heart, neither
is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the
fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted
flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall
I fall down to the stock of a tree?
20 He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath
turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie
in my right hand?
LESSON
INSPIRATION:
Carved
out without functioning parts or living elements
Popularly
referred to as "vanity" - meaning nothing
Inanimate
- Eyes that can't see, ears that can't hear...
Profitable
for nothing
Failure
in everything (Example: Mt Carmel experience)
Those
who worship idols - Giving so much, with
nothing in return
IT HAS BEEN SAID:
“God proclaims His supremacy not as a boast
but as a revelation of truth — there is no rival, no equal, no other.”
“When God says, ‘I am the first and I am the
last,’ He declares Himself the source, sustainer, and end of all things.”
“Idolatry is the attempt to worship the work
of our own hands — a tragic reversal of the Creator-creature order.”
“The idolater changes the truth of God into a
lie, and so darkens his own heart.”
“It is absurd to carve an image and then fall
down before it, asking it to deliver you.”
“Idolatry is the religion of fear; faith in
the true God is the worship of truth and love.”
“To make a god is the height of human folly;
to worship that god is the depth of spiritual blindness.”
“The living God cannot be represented by
lifeless matter.”
KEY POINTS:
Incontrovertible evidence and witnesses that
God is the Greatest
Covertly or overtly, human beings know there
is a God over all
(He may be an unknown God to may)
Disobeying God or following other gods is
foolishness
Foolishness of pagan Idolatry
(Wood/dead object carved out by human, bowed
down to be worshipped by same - High degree Foolishness
Challenge of Faith (unseen) vs physical (seen)
APPLICATIONS:
Embrace the truth:
- Center your life on the one true God. Let
Him govern your choices, desires, and priorities rather than chasing
substitutes or distractions that pretend to satisfy but cannot save.
-
Regularly audit what you value most (money, status, comfort, relationships) and
assess whether you’re ultimately placing trust in something created rather than
the Creator.
-
Integrate God-centered decision making into daily routines (prayer before
choices, Scriptures shaping values, repentance when you slip back into lesser
idols).
Idolatry is not only about graven images; it’s
any practice, habit, or attachment that usurps God’s rightful place in trust
and obedience:
-
Examine daily habits, media consumption, and ambitions to identify where you
might be seeking security, identity, or joy apart from God.
-
Cultivate practices that reinforce dependence on God
- When
you detect a “modern idol” (achievement, approval, comfort, control), bring it
to God in prayer and reorient your life toward Him.
6. What did the prophet emphasize in verses
20-22 of chapter 45?
20 Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, ye
that are escaped of the nations: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of
their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save.
21 Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them
take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told
it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a
just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.
22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends
of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
LESSON
INSPIRATION:
Salvation
cannot be over emphasized - God's plan, Jesus' mission
The
idols couldn't save them - Anything you replaced God won't satisfy
We
need God more than our urgent and relative needs
There
is no alternative to God - Nothing would be suitable
RELATED SCRIPTURES:
IT HAS BEEN SAID:
“Salvation is not found in the works of man
but in the grace of God revealed through His invitation: ‘Look unto Me.’”
“The importance of salvation lies in the fact
that without it, man remains blind, bound, and lost.”
“Salvation is the grand theme of divine
revelation—it displays the justice and mercy of God in perfect harmony.”
“The call to ‘assemble and come’ shows that
salvation is a matter of both personal faith and public confession.”
“To be saved is to be restored to the purpose
for which we were created — fellowship with the living God.”
“Salvation is the supreme act of divine love
and the supreme need of the human soul.”
KEY POINTS:
The word of God and prophets - Agents of true
worship reminder
Salvation establish Spiritual relationship
with God
APPLICATIONS:
Embrace God’s universal invitation:
God’s saving invitation transcends culture,
nationality, and circumstance. Followers of God are called to live as witnesses
who invite others to turn to the true God.
Are you saved?
- In
what ways might I be tempted to rely on something other than the true God for
security or identity?
- How
can I cultivate meaningful outreach that points people to God’s saving
invitation?
- Who
can I encourage this week with a concise message about looking to God for
salvation?
7. Isaiah predicted that Babylon would show
no mercy to the Jews, and would be judged accordingly. She would boast of the
fact that she was the queen and would continue forever. But in a moment, the
judgment for her sins would catch up with her. To whom would the people of
Babylon look for advice to prepare for her destruction? Isaiah 47:12-15
Isaiah 47:12-15 12 Stand now
with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou
hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be
thou mayest prevail.
13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy
counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators,
stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.
14 Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire
shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame:
there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.
15 Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou
hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one
to his quarter; none shall save thee.
LESSON
INSPIRATION:
Limitations
of human resources, compared to God the Source
Babylon
would seek for advice from astrologers, fortune tellers...
They
would not deliver - Why rely on the powerless and helpless?
Good
to come to personal faith in God of Heaven - Proven power
We
need to be diligent in seeking God’s direction and counsel
IT HAS BEEN SAID:
“Those
who trust in human or demonic counsel will find that it fails them in the hour
of need.”
“When
men look to wrong sources for guidance, they exchange divine truth for human
delusion.”
“Those
who consult the stars rather than the Creator of the stars walk in darkness.”
“The
tragedy of Babylon was not ignorance, but arrogance — trusting in her own
wisdom instead of the word of God.”
“False
counsel always promises much but delivers nothing.”
“When
men turn to superstition and worldly philosophies for counsel, they become
weary but not wise.”
“Every
generation repeats Babylon’s error when it prefers psychic insight, human
reason, or popularity to the voice of God.”
“Take
counsel of the Lord, and you shall stand fast; but seek guidance from the proud
or profane, and you shall fall with them in their confusion.”
KEY POINTS:
Future in advance - God knows the end from the
beginning
- The importance of acknowledging and
consulting
Foolishness of man in boasting about the
future - Only if God wills
- Acknowledge God, even when planning for good
deeds
Powerless power helpers - Cease from trusting them
APPLICATIONS:
Boasting in human power and worldly prestige
is futile:
-True
security comes from God
-
Consult God, the Source of all
-Do
not anchor your security or identity in status, wealth, or artificial
prestige.
-
When you sense pride or the urge to boast in worldly credentials, redirect
praise to God and commit yourself to serve others.
8. The people of Judah and Israel had
become comfortable and complacent in their state of obstinacy. Chapter 48 is a
plea for them to consider their destiny in view of God’s past dealings on their
behalf. God had put them into the furnace to refine them and prepare them for
their future work (Isaiah 48:10). What are the symptoms today of complacency in
a person’s spiritual walk?
Isaiah 48:10 10 Behold, I have refined thee, but
not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.
COMPLACENCY?
- a feeling of calm satisfaction with
your own abilities or situation that prevents you from trying harder
- A feeling of contented
self-satisfaction ,
especially when unaware of upcoming trouble
- Makes you unteachable
LESSON
INSPIRATION:
Symptoms
of complacency: Sporadic attendance, less prayer, prioritizing non spiritual
activities, critical spirit,
Antidote:
Consecration, true worship, Spiritual relationship with God, obedience,
absolute trust in God.
IT HAS BEEN SAID:
“Complacency
is the silent killer of spiritual growth.”
“The
danger of complacency lies in mistaking God’s patience for His approval.”
“Complacency
says, ‘I am rich and increased with goods,’ not realizing that it is poor,
blind, and naked.”
“Complacency
in the spiritual life is more dangerous than open rebellion because it hides
under the guise of peace.”
“Complacency
dulls the soul’s sensitivity to God’s voice.”
“The
Lord’s fire is not to burn us up, but to burn away that which should not be in
us. Beware of the spirit that says, ‘I need no refining,’ for that is the
spirit most in need of it.”
KEY POINTS:
Uneasy comfort in falsehood - Anything
against/replace God
We are God’s workmanship - Spiritual and
physical investments
We should avoid complacency - Self reliance -
Neglecting the needful
Dangers of Being Complacent:
1. Stunted spiritual maturity — God’s purpose
is purification; complacency prevents growth.
2. Loss of divine usefulness — An unrefined
vessel cannot carry the weight of God’s glory.
3. Spiritual blindness — A complacent person
cannot discern God’s work or warnings.
4. Hardening of the heart — Repeated
indifference to correction results in spiritual carelessness.
5. Eventual judgment — When refinement is
resisted, discipline intensifies.
APPLICATIONS:
If you’re spiritually comfortable and
stagnant, you may be resisting God’s refining work:
-
Reaffirm daily surrender: invite God to search motives, refine priorities, and
deepen obedience
-
Pursue growth habits: disciplined time in Scripture and prayer
Identify one lingering pattern of compromise.
Create
a plan involving accountability, prayer, and practical boundary steps to move
toward renewal.
Guard against complacency in spiritual life:
Complacency
manifests as spiritual stagnation—a lack of hunger for God, routine without
transformation, and a detachment from mission.
Common symptoms today:
- Prayerlessness or a dull, superficial
prayer life; occasional prayers without persistent seeking.
- Bible reading knowledge without obedience.
- worship activities, or spiritual
disciplines without genuine devotion.
- Reduced zeal for outreach or care for the
needy; living for self-preservation rather than mission.
CONCLUSION
These chapters detail the
futility of wickedness and idol worship, and also explain the peace God gives
to those who follow Him. Today, like the people of Isaiah’s day, we must make
the choice whether or not to follow God and have His peace.
