ELISABETH AND ZACHARIAS - It Took a Miracle

ELISABETH AND ZACHARIAS - It Took a Miracle

INTRODUCTION:
The days of miracles are not over. God is still in the business of exceeding His children’s expectations, bringing hope to hopeless situations, giving beauty for ashes and turning night into day but, here is the catch – Faith and absolute obedience in our walk and work with God.

God is a Master of details. Nothing about our lives is too small for His attention, and nothing is too impossible for His power -from the quiet moments we hardly notice to the situations that appear completely hopeless, God is always at work behind the scenes of life, arranging, guiding, and fulfilling His perfect will.

Our lives are not an accident, and our situations are never beyond God’s reach. Every step we take, every challenge we face, and every unanswered question is known to Him. God’s time is always the best, and He is always on time. Trust Him with the challenges, the process and the “expected end” as promised in His word – “HE CANNOT FAIL FOR HE IS GOD”

1. In reference to our text, what do we know about the spiritual condition of Zacharias and Elisabeth?

Luke 1:6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

LESSON KEY POINTS & INSPIRATIONS:
What are you known of? – That is your real testimony
Our spiritual condition determines our Spiritual good standing
A couple that serves God together build a family with spiritual integrity

They were both blameless and righteous - right in the sight of God
-Walking in all the commandments of God
It is important to follow the commandments of God
-This positions us to receive God’s promised blessings

RELATED BIBLE REFERENCES:

1 Samuel 2:30 – “Them that honour me I will honour.”
Psalm 37:37 – “Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.”

IT HAS BEEN SAID:
1. God honours character before assignment:
“Divine assignments rest safely on lives that are already upright.”
“Before God puts something in our hands, He looks at what is already in our hearts.”

2. Consistency with God’s Word builds credibility with God:
“Integrity is not momentary behaviour but lifelong direction.”
“Heaven trusts the believer who keeps walking, even when life seems still.”

3. Spiritual integrity is measured ‘before God,’ not before men:
“Spiritual integrity shines brightest in the places where only God is watching.”
“Good standing with God is worth more than good reputation with man.”

4. God uses the spiritually upright as vessels of His purposes:
“When God finds a clean vessel, He fills it with a divine purpose.”
“A righteous life positions you for assignments bigger than your prayers.”

5. Integrity is tested in seasons of delay:
“Spiritual integrity is remaining faithful when prayers seem unanswered.”
“Delay may test you, but it should never defile you.”

 6. God remembers those who remain righteous in a corrupt generation:
“Integrity becomes a testimony when the world around you is compromising.”
“Heaven takes note of the believer who stands upright when others bow to convenience.”

APPLICATIONS:
Cultivate consistent righteousness and prayerfulness:
Challenge: - In what areas might I be “blameless” outwardly but harbor moments of doubt or unbelief when God’s promises seem improbable.

Humility in God’s timing:
Challenge: How can I cultivate patience and trust in God’s timeline for answered prayer or surprising assignments?

2. What was Zacharias’ reaction to the message from the angel? Because of this, what happened to Zacharias?

LESSON KEY POINTS & INSPIRATIONS:
Reactions - Emotional - Impulsive - Natural - Logic/facts...
-Out reaction determines the outcome
Source of the message - This should moderate our reaction
-dependable, trustworthy, failure proof, limitations etc
When God speaks - Discipline yourself to believe and comply
Unbelief has consequences

He doubted the angel - his speech was taken from him
When God instructs, just obey
When God promises, believe and receive
Consequences of disobedience and Unbelief - loss and punishment

RELATED BIBLE REFERENCES:
Luke 1:45 — “Blessed is she that believed…”
Mark 11:22 — “Have faith in God.”
Hebrews 11:6 — “Without faith it is impossible to please him.”
Romans 4:20–21 — Abraham “staggered not at the promise of God… being fully persuaded.”
2 Corinthians 5:7 — “We walk by faith, not by sight.”

IT HAS BEEN SAID:
1. Faith must rise above visible limitations:
Zacharias focused on age, circumstance, and physical impossibilities rather than God’s power.

“When God speaks, the size of the promise must matter more than the size of the problem.”
“Faith begins where the senses stop.”

2. Our reaction to God’s Word determines our experience of God’s work:
His disbelief affected his ability to speak until the promise was fulfilled.

“Heaven’s promises demand the amen of your heart, not the analysis of your mind.”
“What you believe shapes what you experience.”

3. God’s promises are not cancelled by our doubts, but our doubts can delay our joy:
The miracle still happened, but Zacharias spent months in silence instead of celebration.

“Unbelief may not stop God, but it can silence your song.”
“Doubt does not erase God’s promise, but it can rob you of the peace that accompanies it.”
4. Positive perspective is an act of worship, not wishful thinking:
 “A faith-filled perspective sees God’s ability, not man’s limitations.”
“Perspective is the lens that turns a divine word into divine expectation.”

5. God expects believers to respond with reverence, not resistance:
“When God speaks, the right response is submission, not suspicion.”
“Faith honours God; doubts and hesitation questions Him.”

6. Questioning is human, but questioning God’s ability is dangerous:
Zacharias didn’t simply ask how — he asked with unbelief.

“Faith asks for understanding; unbelief asks for proof.”
“God welcomes honest questions but rejects faithless doubts.”

7. Signs are not substitutes for faith:
Zacharias sought a sign, but the sign he received disciplined more than it confirmed.

“Asking for confirmation when God has spoken clearly is unbelief in disguise.”
“Seek God’s voice, not God’s signs.”

 8. Faith-filled reactions prepare us for faith-filled results:
When the child was born, Zacharias’s obedience to name him John unlocked his speech.

“True faith obeys even before the evidence arrives.”
“Your miracle matures when your faith aligns with God’s instruction.”

APPLICATIONS:
Cultivate faith rather than demand signs:
 Challenge:
- Am I quick to doubt when God’s promises seem impossible, or quick to trust in His faithfulness?
- Do I seek signs rather than obeying right away in the area God is calling me to?

Respond to God’s message with reverent communication:
Challenge:
  - Are my words aligning with God’s revealed truth, even when hard to accept?
  - If God has spoken a promise, what biblical evidence helps me anchor my speech and actions in faith?

Observe the signs of God’s faithfulness in the waiting:
-While waiting for fulfillment, look for how God is already at work
- In what ways has God already begun to fulfill or prepare the fulfillment of His promises in my life or church community?
- How can I posture myself to recognize and celebrate God’s work in others’ lives during periods of waiting?

3. What was the miracle that accompanied the birth of John? What brought this miracle about?

LESSON KEY POINTS & INSPIRATIONS:
The called and chosen has Special mission - Supernatural
Manifestation and delivery of mission supplies come supernaturally
When God is on a mission, he beats human logic and expectations
John’s parents were carrier of Special duty child
-They had to wait for God’s time and method

Zacharias received his speech - Confirmation that replaced faith
John was named by God - God knows and named us before birth
Evidence miracle - initiated by doubt - comes with consequences

God restored Zacharias’ speech instantly the moment he obeyed God by naming the child “John.”
Zacharias’ discipline ended when his obedience was perfected.
Zacharias’ nine months of silence prepared his heart to praise with depth and sincerity.
The supernatural events around John’s birth pointed to his God-ordained mission as the forerunner of Christ.

8. God Restores What Unbelief Damaged:
Though unbelief cost Zacharias his voice temporarily, God restored him fully and graciously.
“Grace rewrites the stories that unbelief interrupts.”
“Where doubt broke the bridge, mercy rebuilt it.”

APPLICATIONS:
Trust God’s miraculous promises, even when humanly unlikely:
Challenge:
  - In what areas have I dismissed God’s promises as impossible? How can I reframe them as divine opportunities for faith?
  - Am I quick to doubt, or quick to believe when God’s word confronts my circumstance?

Respond to God’s works with praise and worship:
Allow God to shape your speech toward praise once He moves in your life.
Challenge:
  - How has God moved in my life recently, and how have I responded in praise?
  - Is my conversation more about complaint or testimony of what God is doing?

Recognize divine timing and signs as confirmations of God’s plan:
-God’s purposes are at work. Be attentive to unexpected confirmations in your own journey.
Challenge:
  - What signs of God’s faithfulness have I overlooked because I expected a different timeline?
  - How can I cultivate patience and discernment to recognize God’s timing in ongoing blessings?

4. What was the first thing Zacharias did when his tongue was loosed? How can we follow his example in this?

LESSON KEY POINTS & INSPIRATIONS:
Expressive praise and thanksgiving - In everything give thanks
- Praise reaction to the angel's message would have saved him the dumb experience
Experience based miracle - thought him the right response and reaction
Lesson: Praise God first, in all things

He praised God – Importance of praising God when he does the "impossible"
- Salvation, healing etc

Zacharias’ first words after months of silence were praise—miracles should lead us to worship, not pride.

APPLICATIONS:
Respond with immediate praise to God’s faithfulness:
-When God answers prayer or confirms His promise, begin with worship and blessing to God, not only private gratitude but public testimony.
Challenge:
  - Create a habit of a short praise-filled response when you sense God moving (verbal or silent).
  - Share a brief testimony with a trusted friend or family, giving glory to God.
Reflection prompts:
  - Have I quickly praised God for His answered promises, or do I tend to move on to the next concern?

  - Seek opportunities to bless others with encouragement about God’s faithfulness.
  - What speech patterns need recalibration to honor God and build others?

5. List some other Biblical instances where God did the impossible.

“Recollection is protection; remembering God keeps anxiety away.”
“When problems grow, remember how faithful God has been in the small.”

APPLICATIONS:
Challenge:
Start a small-mercies journal:
-Each day, write down one concrete mercy you saw from God—big or small (a safe day at work, a timely reminder, a minor provision, a helpful conversation).
-Build a tangible trail of faithfulness to look back on when bigger trials come.
-What happened today that I didn’t earn or deserve? How did God’s provision or guidance show up in a small way?

Reframe big problems with past mercies:
-When a big problem arises, list 3 past mercies you’ve recorded and connect them to how God might handle the current situation.
Prompt questions:
 - What pattern do I see in how God helped before? Could He use similar means again?
- What promise from Scripture applies to this moment?

Align daily decisions with the posture of gratitude:
-Before making a major decision or responding to a trial, pause to thank God for past mercies, then ask for wisdom and move forward with faith.
-Keep perspective that God’s faithfulness in the little things is evidence of His larger plan.

CONCLUSION:
God moves in a mysterious way
Verse 1
God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;
He plants His footsteps in the sea
And rides upon the storm.

Verse 2
Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never-failing skill
He treasures up His bright designs,
And works His sovereign will.

Verse 3
Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take.
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy, and shall break,
In blessings on your head.

Verse 4
Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust Him for His grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.

Verse 5
His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour:
The bud may have a bitter taste
But sweet will be the flower.

Verse 6
Blind unbelief is sure to err,
And scan His work in vain:
God is His own interpreter,
And He will make it plain.
